But, not to worry!!! There is much that we can do for the remainder of this school year and over the summer to help your child gain a few levels before first grade rolls around. In class, we are focused on mastering those kindergarten sight words, because the more words a child can read quickly by memory, the better and faster reader they will become. We are also going to review and continue working with CVC words, as well as the "letter buddies" that have been introduced the class to...blends and digraphs, such as th, sh, ing, and others. Knowing these sounds will help the students to sound out words while they read.
At home, set aside a time every day to work on reading skills. The main activity you must do is READ LOTS OF BOOKS TO YOUR CHILD, every single day. Visit the local library or the book store and let your child pick out books that interest and fascinate them. As you read, discuss what the characters are doing and why. Point out sight words that you find on the pages, and ask your child to help you sound out the tough words. When the story is over, close the book and ask your child to retell the story from beginning to end, including lots of details from text.
Also, I've been busy in the copy room making Summer Fun Review packets for all the students. These are thick packets jam packed with fun, hands-on activities for math and reading that you can use with your child over the summer. Just 15 minutes a day, every day, can make a huge difference and give your sweetie pie a leg up for first grade. The packets will be coming home very soon, so be on the lookout for those.
Thank you for all you do. And remember, you ARE your child's first (and best) teacher!!! Have a great week,
