In Kindergarten, especially during the first months, students do most of their language arts and journal writing responses by drawing pictures, or illustrations. You have seen us ask students on their homework to "use colors and details". Well, here are some real example from our classroom which show students beginning to move from the stick figure into more detailed illustrations. If your child is still making stick figures, he can learn with your guidance to add fun and important details...like clothes! Have a look. And here is a slide show you and your child can watch together. Mrs. C taught a series of lessons on landforms, like hills, valleys and mountains. At the end, we rolled up our sleeves, pulled out the flour and measuring cups, and created our own dough landscapes.

This week, we have lots of great Fall activities planned for the kids to enhance their classroom learning, and we hope that you will participate and enjoy them along with us. This coming Thursday, we have an In-House Field Trip for K-2 to the Pumpkin Patch. The farmer will be bringing pumpkins for all, and the kids will get to pet baby farm animals, create a class scarecrow and watch a magic show. If you are planning to chaperone, please fill out and return the pink form that was sent last week, and be sure to have your fingerprinting receipt on file in the office. On Friday afternoon, Mrs. Miller is hosting our Career Dress-Up Day. All week, we will be learning about careers, and exploring what the kids might want to do for a living. Students will wear or bring in an outfit, uniform, or costume that represents what they want to be. Then the entire school will parade around campus and show their career choices. This is a great time to get fun, artistic and creative with your child, as well as to share your knowledge of careers. Finally, we will be exploring nature this week by going on our own Fall nature walk. Mrs. C and Mrs. J will have lots of fun science and arts crafts, as well as expanding our Autumn vocabulary. Thanks to those of you who already took your family fun nature walk and sent in bags of fall materials. We will use those in the class as well. Jonathan and His Mommy--an great urban story about a mother-son duo who love to take walks. What kind of steps did they take? Who did they see on their walk? And most importantly, who is the Boss of the Criss-Cross? I Went Walking--I remember getting this for my oldest son's very first birthday! The interesting art style and repetitive text makes this a great first reader for Kindergarten. Our own classroom version of this book is in the works, and will be coming to you very soon by the KinderStreet kids. Stay tuned! Have a great week everyone!
We just finished a three-week unit on colors and color words, and the kids made lots of progress learning to read and write them. Now you can extend their learning at home with one of these fun at-home activities:
In math, we are studying numbers from one to ten. Most kindergarteners can say their numbers aloud from one to ten. Counting objects, and learning an innate sense of numbers (or mental math) can be a lot more tricky. To help your child with numbers at home, here is a fun and easy game that you can print out and play just about anywhere: If you play this game several times a week at home over the next few months, you will be shocked at how quickly your child will grasp addition and subtraction that we will introduce in the spring. If you liked doing these at-home activities, leave us a comment above and let us know how it went. We love to share fun ideas with you. Remember, you are and always will be your child's first, best
and most beloved teacher! On Thursday, October 14, we will have a half day of school. Breakfast will be served at the normal time from 7:30 to 8:00 for those who eat breakfast at school. However, kindergarten lunch will be bumped back to 9:00. Dismissal on Thursday will be at 10:55. Be sure to make arrangements accordingly, and add this date to your calendar. Additionally, there will be no school on Friday. Also, this week is our Kindergarten Literacy Assessment week. We have been assessing all the students on letter recognition, dictation, sight word recognition and emergent reading behaviors. Look for a summary of scores to come home within the next few weeks. Results from the test help us better teach your child, and also will give you an idea of what areas to focus on when you teach your child at home. Have an awesome week! We had our very first Lunch Bunch on Thursday, and it was a blast! Mrs. C bought juice boxes for the winners, and Mrs. Jenkins bought Dunkin Donuts. The Lunch Bunchers got to go get lunch early and eat in the classroom with the teachers. It was so much fun, and we can't wait to do it again on the last school day of each month. Here is a list of the kids who came to Lunch Bunch in September: Cynthia Danielle Emmanuel Fernando Gabriel (absent) John Mert Nicholas Sam Stella Congratulations to our A-Team! Keep up the super work!!!
