Writing Fundamentals is also in full swing, and we are helping students add a variety of tools to their "writing toolbelt" to help them move toward becoming independent writers. Some of those tools are:
- learning to spell sight words correctly
- making use of classroom tools (such as word charts, word banks and word walls) to help them spell
- stretching out words and breaking off the sounds to write unknown words (also known as KidWriting)
- re-reading what you wrote aloud to make sure it makes sense
You can help your child with their writing at home. Click on the link above for Sight Words and use the list to make flash cards for home practice. Play lots of fun games with the flash cards (Go Fish, Concentration, call out a word and have them slap it with a fly swatter, hide word cards around the room, etc.) Have your child spell out the sight words with magnets on the refrigerator, or have fun spelling tests.
As for KidWriting, scroll down (or visit the Videos tab) and watch the video that my son and I created which demonstrates the word stretching technique. Try this at home with your child as they do their homework or write a note to family and friends.
Quick sight word recall combined with strong skills in phonics will pave the way for future success in reading, writing and spelling for your child.
Enjoy!
Jonathan and Mrs. Jenkins give a demonstration on how to stretch out and break up words in order to hear and write the sounds.
